I received a call Saturday morning on June 4th from Karen Ritchie, Senior Vice President at Baird MacGregor Insurance Brokers LP, where we both work. She was seeking my assistance in escalating a response to the Coast Guard’s directive to immediately retrieve the wreckage of our client’s boat from the bottom of the Bay of Quinte. Our client had reported a claim under his insurance policy late Friday afternoon, advising that his boat had burst into flames and then sank. Luckily, our client and his wife escaped unharmed and swam to safety.
We were unable to reach the insurance company after hours and realized this urgent situation could not wait until Monday when their office was open. Karen and I worked together and eventually found and contacted Mammoth Marine Canada, a company that specializes in nautical emergency response. Much to our client’s relief, Becky, one of Mammoth’s captains took our call and immediately sprang into action by making prompt contact with the Coast Guard. Mammoth assembled a crew of six including a captain, three divers, equipped with two boats, underwater drones, and GPS tracking technology.
They arrived at a local Belleville Hotel by 3:00 AM Sunday morning, were in their truck by 7:00 AM and were on site by 8:00 AM. The Mammoth team searched for nine hours deploying their two boats, captain, divers, and underwater drones assisted by the Coast Guard’s aerial drones for a half a mile radius of the GPS coordinates of where the boat sank.
They provided a copy of this tracking to the Coast Guard who were appreciative of the quick action and our prompt engagement. The on-site captain, Mark Johnson called once the search was terminated to provide a detailed account of search efforts and reported that the Coast Guard was satisfied with the response. The next day, I looked up what fines our client might have faced had he not responded and they are significant! I am a veteran insurance broker, and President & CEO of Baird MacGregor.
I started my career working in claims and we have seen every imaginable kind of emergency over the years. This is one of the most impressive responses to an emergency claim situation that I have ever experienced. The professionalism, speed, diligence, effort, communication, skill and teamwork Mammoth demonstrated was commendable. I would not hesitate to recommend Mammoth Marine for any nautical emergency.

“Mammoth Marine was awesome. My boat sunk, I called them and with in minutes I received a call from Captain Mark, explained my situation and sent a couple of photos. Next day Captain Mark and Captain Dane arrived. Both were total gentleman, and very professional. They had my boat out of the water in minutes. They towed it to the ramp and I trailered it. They figured out the issue and told me everything to do to get my boat up and running.I was throughly impressed with Captain Mark and Captain Dane.
